I picked up a bunch of acorn shells at the park recently, and they’ve been sitting in a little bowl on my desk for a while now. I wasn’t sure what to do with them until CleverPatch sent me through a collection of their crafty goodies, and there was some embroidery thread included.
I invited my friend Kristen around (I’ve mentioned her before here), and we also taped a very messy DI-Wine to go along with this tutorial. Yes, the craft is that easy that you can have a couple of glasses while crafting. Perfection in my book!
Check out the video here, or read on for more legible but less entertaining instructions.
Nut shells (a walk to the local park or bushland should provide you with these), 2 x earring findings, 2 x jump rings, 2 x head pins, 2 small beads (must fit easily into the nut with room to spare), thread, hot glue gun, jewellery pliers, drill and small bit.
Take the nut shell firmly between your fingers and slowly drill a hole exactly in the middle. Go slow so you don’t break the shell, and press down firmly so the hole is as bear the middle of the shell as you can get it.
Insert the head pin into the hole from the bottom and use your circular pliers to twist a loop into the top. You might have to trim the head pin.
Insert your embroidery thread through the bead and tie it off. Wind the thread around the bead until you have a circular bulk of thread that fits into the nut with half sticking out. Trim the end of the thread.
Fill the nut with hot glue and press the thread ball into it with the open end in the glue.
Attach the jump ring and the earring with the pliers.
