If you’re looking for a pair of show- stopping earrings, these are the ones. I wore them into work the day after I made them and the first three people I saw said, ‘Wow, great earrings!’
Of course, I work with a really nice bunch of people, so even if they were thinking ‘What the hell has she got on her face?!’ they still would have said, ‘Wow, great earrings!’
Who cares, though? I feel like a tropical fruit, and it feels great!
Shrinky- Dink plastic, Sharpies, scalpel, white paper, baking paper, oven, oven tray, pencil, earring findings and jewellery glue.
Draw a pineapple. I did a quick Google image search, found one I liked and then drew it freehand. If you’re not keen on freehand, print out your chosen image and outline in pencil on the reverse. Cut out the stencil.
Trace the stencil onto the Shrinky- Dink using your chosen colours. Flip the stencil and trace again. Colour, and cut out with the scalpel.
Here’s the tricky/ irritating part. When I did this project, I’d forgotten how annoying working with shrink plastic was. Heat the oven to 150C, put the cut-outs on a tray lined with baking paper. Then put them into the oven for 2-3 minutes. When it shrinks and curls in on itself, LEAVE IT! Continue heating until the middle of the plastic is shrunk, and it will level out a bit. Then take it out of the oven while still warm and smash it flat. I used my thumb, a tea towel, and my frustration.
Note: If you’re a perfectionist, this isn’t the project for you. The pineapples won’t shrink exactly the same size. Do an Elsa and ‘let it go’.
Attach the earring backs with the glue.
