Have you ever seen those salt and pepper shakers made out of Corona bottles? I always thought they were so cool, but didn’t want to buy them because I was sure on one drunken weekend I’d crack the lid and end up with a mouth full of pepper.
So when I found these clear bottles online at CleverPatch, I immediately saw a way to have the cute beer bottle shape, but not the indigestion, from making my own.
2 x clear glass bottles, contact, scalpel, glass paint, brush, drill and thin drill bit.
4 days (I used 4 coats of glass paint, and it takes 24 hours for a coat to dry. I know.)
Under $20. The bottles cost just $1.76!
Cut a piece of contact that’s the length and width of the flat part of your bottle. A little overlap is ok.
Trace a pattern onto the contact, and cut it out with a scalpel. Keep the cut outs, you’ll be using them for the reverse pattern.
Stick down the contact onto one bottle. Stick down the cut outs onto the other bottle. You might need to stick down an edge piece along the top of the flat surface if you have patterns that end on the edge.
Paint with the glass paint. The first and second coats will have you going ‘Aaargh!’ because they look practically clear and you can see the brush lines in them. Don’t despair! Coats 3 and 4 will improve it immensely.
Once dried, peel off the contact slowly. I had a couple of parts that peeled away, but I just painted them in again with the brush. (and waited for them to dry again). Then stick the bottles in the oven using the instructions on your paint to set.
Take the tops of the bottles and mark where you want the holes to go on the inside of the cap. Place the cap onto a piece of scrap wood, and drill slowly with the smallest drill bit.
Fill the bottles, attach the lid and start the party!
