This post shall otherwise be known as ‘The Karmic Lampshade’. The lamp had been sitting on my floor in pieces for a few months. I grabbed it from someone’s ‘too good to throw out, but not motivated to fix’ pile. I was convinced it had bad ju-ju, because I wasn’t too sure what to do with it either.
Then on Saturday morning everything just came together at once to produce a better result than I would have gotten if I’d forced the project so many months ago.
The araldite glue was sitting in the top of the toolbox. I was tidying my craft room in preparation for a product video I would be shooting next week. I took a stronder to Spotlight and found the most perfect fabric sitting randomly in the wrong spot on the shelves (although that’s pretty usual for Spotters, right?).
It was kismet, my Karmic Lampshade was coming together without any effort on my part!
2m fabric, araldite glue, white spray paint, magenta acrylic paint, brush, masking tape, fabric scissors, iron, hot glue gun.
First, I painstakingly glued the broken pieces together. If you look closely it’s still a little wonky in the photos, those parts would not stay stuck in the right place!
Then, I sprayed the wood white to cover the cracks and glue, taping over the inside rim because I planned on painting that magenta and the gloss spray I was using would make the paint less sticky.
Once the white paint was dry, a little more tape was added and I painted the magenta on. The base was done.
While I was waiting for the paint to dry, I worked on the lampshade itself. Did I mention it was no-sew? I never really appreciated the meaning of the words until I undertook my own project!
Cut the fabric into strips approximately 10cm apart. It doesn’t matter if the strips are a little wonky.
Cut the longer strips into lengths that will cover the front of the lampshade with about 10cm extra. I was lucky, I just had to quarter my fabric strips.
Iron a seam down both sides of the fabric. This is where the wonky cutting will disappear.
Lay a strip of fabric on a flat surface, wrong side up. Roll the lampshade onto the fabric slowly making sure the fabric is flat underneath the shade. Then take your hot glue gun and pump glue into the edge of the lampshade and press the fabric down. Spin the lampshade and do the same for the other end
Repeat Step 4 until the whole lampshade is covered.
A measure of a great project is when I send it to my sister and she immediately texts back, ”I want it!”.
Too bad, so sad, Jodi. Find your own Karmic Lampshade.
