I love how DIY kits as Christmas gifts are everywhere these days, and the calibre just keep getting better and better.
Remember when all you could get your hands on was a nail art kit or a beaded bracelet kit from a department store? They came in a giant pink box with a ten year old kid beaming out from the cover.
No thanks.
Now, you’ve got friendship bracelets, iPhone covers, dream catchers, terrariums, hand looms, stamps and SO MUCH MORE, thanks to stores like Typo, Sportsgirl, Smiggle, Riot!, Target and Dotti. And the price is perfect for a Secret Santa gift, plus they come in cute little boxes.
I wrote about my ‘tude to gifts in a previous post:
Let’s be honest. The thing about gifts is that sometimes they can be an imposition on people’s taste, their decor or their storage availability.
You take something that you think will be cool, and give it to this person to do with what they will. If the gift fits them, it will be a successful addition to their house and life. If it does not, it’s a waste of money that will cause them a twinge whenever you come over and they have to remember to bring it out of storage.
Not many of the people I know would appreciate a DIY gift, but how will they know they don’t like it if I don’t force them to try it?
And if they’re not keen, they can just ask me to make it for them…
