This DIY project has been, what they call in the trade, the long con. I picked up these birds nests at a friends wedding in April. (They were party favors, and they were given with consent).
If you're like me, you've not been able to resist the urge to purchase some shiny, shiny birdies. They're everywhere these days. My shiny birdies stay in a box all year until I bring them out at Christmas time.
They got an airing a little early this year. I don't know if it was because I'd been waiting to put it all together for so long, but it was an incredibly easy project!
I resisted the urge to paint the nests gold like I had planned, I kind of like the rustic look, and the Ferrero Rocher's really pop on the natural coloured straw.
Here's where I stand on edible stuff on Christmas trees: Be very careful if you're the eatee. The onus is on the decorator to make sure their delicious decorations aren't left over from the previous year. I've been the victim of one smooshy candy cane too many...
Under $20, if you get free birds nests...
Birds nests (mine were from a wedding favor store), clips (these are avialble in the millinery section of the craft store), hot glue gun, chocolate (I used Ferrero Rocher's because there were no egg shaped lollies available out of Easter. If you're planning ahead, get some eggs and put them in the cupboard, but please consider the paragraph above).
Heat the hot glue gun. Yeah, I'm really stretching this one out!
Affix clips to bottom of nests with a liberal dollop of glue.
Wait for the glue to dry. Don't eat the chocolate.
Jam the chocolates into the nest and stick them in your tree.
