I saw this awesome pillow in a store window the other day, and after looking at the $50 price tag I had a mega “I can do that” moment.
The only thing was I couldn’t find the right fabric. It was like the Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This fabric is too thin. This fabric is too brown. This fabric is too expensive!
I wanted to use a tropical print with palm fronds, but for once Spotlight was extremely lacking in naff figural fabric patterns. But Chica Booti wasn’t!
That tropical pattern is so in right now, so I looked into the stores to see if there was something that I liked. I picked up a dress from the sale rack in an XXL for $8.99, and a cushion from K-Mart for $5, and was able to create my own cushion with a fabric that I liked for a fraction of the cost. #winning
Time: Under 2 hours.
Cost: approx. $20
Materials: Dress, cushion, press studs, thread and a sewing machine.
When you’re choosing a fabric, make sure that the dress is large enough to cover the size of the cushion you want to make. You may end up buying a dress that’s a few sizes bigger than the size you actually wear.
Unpick the stiches in the panels that you want, but leave the hem intact. Line the panels together and sew along the bottom of the pillow (directly opposite the hem).
Measure a straight line from the edge of the bottom and top of the pillow leaving and trim. Remember to leave a seam allowance.
Sew the two sides of the pillow. You should now be able to turn it inside out and have one end open.
Attach the press studs to the open end of the pillow as needed.
(This is what I'm faced with whever I take photos, today she wouldn't get out of the way.)
