I really love it when a project that you weren’t too sure about comes together so amazingly. There was a LOT of fist pumping and muttered ‘Yeah! You’re awesome!’ going on in my backyard yesterday.
Although, if I’m going to make any more garden themed DIY’s, I’m going to have to seriously weed my garden! A little bit of rain and BAM! The little suckers are up to your chest.
This idea came about after a trip to a local market. Some enterprising stall holder had made little pots out of various tools and cooking implements. Very cute, but with the $40 price tag, I was definitely not parting with my cash for something I could do myself.
I found the ladles at Target for $2 each. They came in a variety of colours, but I chose black because something inside of me said 'no' to buying pink cooking implements.
You’ll also need some dowel, screws, a hook, black paint, succulents and dirt. Tool wise you’ll need a drill, a saw and an orbital sander.
First, measure and cut the dowel so it covers the whole of the handle, then paint black. Drill a small guiding hole and screw the hook into the top.
The next step is to drill a drainage hole into each ladle.
Tip: Make sure you drill at the lowest point of the ladle so the excess water will drip out and not keep the roots too wet.
Tip: Drill carefully, start with a smaller drill bit and move up in size to avoid cracking.
Next, place the first ladle on the dowel and measure where you want the screw to go. Then remove, and drill another small guiding hole. Put the ladle back on, and drill away! Repeat the process with the other ladles. I put in two screws to secure tightly.
The final step is to plant and hang!
Tip: Choose plants with a small root system, there’s not much room for soil in the well of the ladle.
And for something dog related, here's a shot of me trying to get the product shot, and Pilot crusing over for a taste of the succulent, then pulling back in shock. Ouch!
