My first foray into using more than a point and shoot!
For me, it’s easier and quicker to pick up my Canon S95, get a shot, and then get on with the rest of the DIY project. Ain’t nobody got time to fiddle around in the settings and press buttons that I don’t know what they do!
But I’m not doing any favours to myself (and my so far nonexistent fans?) when the photos I take don’t do the work justice.
Am I right?
Adelle of Where the Styled Things Are is my inspiration for this blog, and I read a copy of her ‘Blogography’ just before doing this DIY shoot.
It’s not perfect, but I’m taking baby steps. And I think you can see a marked difference in the shots I would have taken with the point and shoot and the DSLR.
The first thing I did was change my location. I usually shoot where I create, which doesn’t always have the correct light. We’re lucky to have a spare room with a lot of natural light (read: too poor to put furniture in).
Per ‘Blogography’, I set up the camera on a tripod and put an interesting backdrop down. The peg board is a leftover from a project I did for WTSTA and Worx Power Tools, which you can see here.
The Before DIY Shot

The After DIY Shot
I used a 50mm lens on a Canon 7D. I took a test shot and it was a little dark, and that’s where husband steps in. He got really interested when I pulled out his camera and started pressing buttons.
So, the result is that I don’t know exactly what buttons he pressed! Plus, he was completely atrocious at explaining what he was doing. He’s a computer programmer, so that should explain it to you all.
What I did do was fiddle with the aperture to get the right amount of light, and also the slight fuzziness to the background. I was sitting at around f3-4 for the DSLR shots.
I think I’m on the right track at least, I took a few shots using different f-stops and worked the angle of the lens and the layout of the project to get a better, more cohesive shot than I would have gotten with the original digicam.
